Educational Promotion of Democratic Values II - ABC of Democracy, The Second Edition

Center for Development of Serbia organized a series of educational seminars in 12 towns in Serbia, with the idea of promoting democratic values among high school graduates. During the seminars every graduate who participated received a copy of ABC of Democracy, a handbook which comprehensibly explains the ways in which modern democratic society functions. The goal of this project was to show to the high school graduates, who had the right to vote for the first time, how a democratic society that is founded on the rule of law, respect for human rights and market economy functions, thus contributing to the overall democratic development of Serbia.

Educational Seminars

Educational seminars were held in 12 towns in Serbia - Subotica, Novi Sad, Vrsac, Belgarde, Kragujevac, Uzice, Zajecar, Kraljevo, Leskovac, Nis, Presevo and Prokuplje. 1171 graduates attended the seminars (50% of each sex). The program of the seminars included:

  • Interactive lecture with the topic: Society in transition - How to create a democracy
  • Debate about the topic: Tyranny v. Democracy
The seminar lecturers were: Prof. Cedomir Cupic, Prof. Ratko Bozovic, Miroslav Prokopijevic, PhD, Slobodan Markovic, PhD, Slavisa Orlovic MA, Nenad Djordjevic, Dragan Dobrasinovic and Lazar Maricevic. Debate participants were members of a debate club "Open communication" from Belgrade and Nis.

ABC of Democracy

The second edition of ABC of Democracy - A guide to a modern Democratic Society- is a practical and comprehensible guide to the basis of democratic society. In a concise way, it provides relevant information about conditions for successful functioning of democracy through the following chapters: Democratic government, Civil Society, Rule of Law, Protection of Human Rights, Non-Governmental Organizations, Elections and Political Parties, Free Market, Two Centuries of Struggle for democratic society in Serbia, Political System of Serbia and Montenegro, Local self-government and Criminal Procedure.

The reviewers of the handbook are Prof. Vukasin Pavlovic and Prof. Zarko Trebjesanin.

The project was implemented in cooperation with: G3 from Subotica, Toplica Center for Democracy and Human Rights and Union of Teachers from Vojvodina.

The project implementation was supported by the Finland Embassy in Belgrade and Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA).
